Interpreter translates spoken text from one language to another. They can translate from the foreign language to the native language and vice versa. Interpreters usually translate at international conferences, lectures, formal meetings, court hearings, TV live broadcasts. Sometimes they may have the text previously to the event and also may put down some notes when working.

Tasks:

1. Ensuring successful communication between two parties, which do not speak the same language
2. Assimilating speakers' words quickly, including jargon and acronyms
3. Analysing sentences expressed in one language and explaining them using another language
4. Building up specialist vocabulary banks, writing notes to aid memory
5. Using microphones and headsets, using the internet to conduct research
6. Preparing paperwork - considering agendas before meetings, or lectures/speeches when received in advance
7. Organising workload and liaising with internal departments, agencies and/or employers
8. Working to a professional code of ethics covering confidentiality and impartiality
9. Being aware of the cultures, current affairs, political events

Qualifications and training:

Mostly all graduates with advanced language skills can enter the field of interpreting. Though most employers prefer graduates in modern languages, translation, and interpreting. A post-graduation qualifications or Masters’ Degree in interpreting is an advantage. Interpreters may have an additional degree in medical sciences, law sciences or other field and post-graduate qualifications proving their language skills, so that they can work with the terms of a particular field.
